Ideas

Notes from the think tank.

Short pieces on how we see things. More will follow as we write them.

Note 01

Technology will not save us.

There is an old hope that the next machine will fix what people could not. It never has. Printing did not end ignorance, the telephone did not end loneliness, and AI will not end anything on its own.

What changes the world is people with a clearer view and better tools. The tools we have now are the best that have ever existed. The question is not what they will do for us. It is what we will do with them.

Note 02

Tie the room together.

In The Big Lebowski, a rug “really tied the room together.” We laugh about it, and we keep coming back to it, because every good project has one of those: a single idea that makes everything around it make sense.

Without it, a project is a pile of good parts. With it, the parts start working for each other. We spend more time looking for that idea than on anything else.

Note 03

The answer is often next door.

Fields grow walls. People inside them read the same papers and try the same fixes. Meanwhile the answer sits in the next field over: a method from engineering, a model from biology, a habit from the film set.

AI tools make it easier than ever to walk next door. You still have to know which door to open. That is pattern-matching, and it is the skill we lean on most.

New every Monday and Thursday.

Field Notes on Mondays, The Bigger Picture on Thursdays. Written with AI tools, with a person in charge.

Have an idea that needs a second mind?

We like the problems other people find too strange or too early.
